What is a Jurat?

A jurat is a certification or declaration typically found at the end of an affidavit or legal document, indicating that the document has been sworn before an authorized official, such as a notary public. This official witnesses the signing of the document and certifies that the signer has affirmed or sworn to the accuracy and truthfulness of its contents under oath. The jurat usually includes details such as the date, the location, and the official’s signature, and it often begins with phrasing like “Subscribed and sworn to before me…” If no other format is prescribed, a Jurat form may be used when an individual is signing and swearing (or affirming) that certain written statements are true.
