Remote online notarizations (RONs) are electronic notarizations where the signer and notary do not need to be in the same physical location, instead using audio-visual technology for the process. A notary, following their state’s laws, verifies the signer’s identity through multi-step processes like knowledge-based questions or ID analysis, witnesses the signer’s electronic signature, and applies their own electronic signature and seal to the document. This process is legally equivalent to a traditional, in-person notarization and offers increased convenience and efficiency for various documents across many industries.
With remote online notarization, a signer personally appears before the Notary at the time of the notarization using audio-visual technology over the internet instead of being physically present in the same room. Remote online notarization is also called webcam notarization, online notarization or virtual notarization.
